The importance of switching off

The importance of switching off for employees wellbeing. An interview with Izzy Piddocke from Leisure Resorts.

One of the costliest aspects of employment is unplanned absenteeism. Most employers continuously experience a call from an employee requesting a last-minute leave. Absenteeism always generates loss to business, Macrothink Institute’s research (2020) estimates that it’s about 8.5% off payroll cost. In many cases, last-minute absence results from employees neglecting their wellbeing and ignoring the need to rest.

What are the best ways of winding down and getting the much-needed break? This month, we are bringing you an interview with Izzy Piddocke, Digital Manager from Leisure Resorts. We’ll be talking about the importance of switching off and its impact on employee wellbeing.

MT: Since lockdown restrictions have been waived, why are people coming to stay at Leisure Resorts? Have their motivations changed?

There are so many benefits of staying in the UK for a holiday and I think the pandemic has really encouraged people to look for holidays closer to home. You can still enjoy the freedom and joy of getting away and visiting somewhere new without having to travel too far! A UK holiday means no baggage allowance, no getting to the airport at 3am. Best of all? Your dog can come on holiday too!

MT: What are people expecting from staying at one of your lodges? What would their typical day look like?

A typical day on holiday at a Leisure Resorts park might start with breakfast out on the deck of your lodge whilst enjoying the view. Then, a trip out to visit local attractions or to go for a walk. All our parks are in stunning countryside locations and have the most incredible scenery on their doorstep.

There are plenty of charming towns and villages to visit and there really is something for everyone. After returning to the holiday park, you could enjoy a visit to the on-site farm to make friends with the alpacas, donkeys and other animals (Ullswater Heights and Aysgarth Lodges both have farms).

You could then visit the on-site restaurant for early evening drinks or dinner. Or, maybe, you’d prefer to take advantage of the self-catering facilities by cooking your favourite meal in the comfort of your lodge. Your evening can be spent relaxing in the bubbling hot tub, looking out at the starry night sky.

MT: Congratulations on opening the new site in Angrove! What does the area have to offer?

Thank you, we’re all very excited about it! Angrove Country Park is incredibly located, surrounded by the stunning North York Moors. There are plenty of walks to enjoy and local towns to explore. Moreover, it is close to the Yorkshire Coast, with popular destinations such as Whitby and Saltburn-by-the-Sea which are perfect for fun-filled days out.

MT: How would you compare a staycation at home to staying at a holiday home at LR?

After spending months locked down during the pandemic, most people are keen for a change of scene. Our holiday parks offer the most beautiful scenery around! What’s more, all our parks have on-site bar and restaurants serving delicious homecooked meals made with the freshest locally sourced ingredients. Aysgarth Lodges and Ullswater Heights both have woodfired pizza ovens, where you can watch your pizza being made! Our accommodation has all the home comforts you’d expect, and so much more.

Above all, enjoying a short break on a Leisure Resorts park is so incredibly relaxing. When you’re in your lodge or relaxing in your hot tub, you’ll feel a million miles away from the stresses and strains of everyday life.

MT: Ullswater Heights has won two great awards which amplify your position as a holiday provider. The Hoseasons Awards went all digital. For many businesses, covid restrictions accelerated digital transformation. How does the technology that Leisure Resorts adopted help you serve your customers better?

To meet and exceed our customers wants and needs, we have adopted a variety of strategies to allow us to open up the channels of communication. The Leisure Resorts app has been extremely helpful. Especially, throughout the pandemic with the push notification feature enabling us to instantly communicate important updates and messages.

MT: You must have all ‘know how’ about unwinding and wellbeing. Would you share three tips with Clarity365 blog readers?

Personally, my little rescue dog (adopted from Romania) brings me so much joy. Being a dog owner promotes a healthy lifestyle with regular walks and spending time in nature which is essential for wellbeing.

My second tip would be to prioritise spending time doing things you really enjoy, and saying no to the things you don’t want to do.

Lastly, having been fortunate enough to have experienced staying in a variety of Leisure Resorts lodges, it’s the feeling of getting away from it all. Visiting waterfalls and lakes, enjoying great food and relaxing in the hot tub is a brilliant way to unwind whilst connecting with loved ones. But I may be biased 🙂
